Work While Study in Canada

Is an international student eligible to work while studying in Canada?

As an international student in Canada, you may be eligible to work while you study. You need a valid study permit that lists the appropriate work conditions and you must be attending a designated learning institution in a full-time post-secondary program of at least six months in duration.

On-campus: You may work without a separate work permit, for the school, student organisation or a business on campus. There is no federal cap on hours, provided you continue to meet your eligibility requirements.

Off-campus: As of 8 November 2024, you can work up to 24 hours per week during regular academic sessions, and you may work full-time during scheduled breaks (such as summer or winter holidays), if you were enrolled full-time before and after the break.

Co-op/internship: If your program requires a co-op or internship placement, you must apply for a co-op work permit in addition to your study permit.

What is the average pay for part-time jobs for international students?

Part-time jobs typically pay from around CAD $15 to $20 per hour for many student roles, depending on the province and job type. In some on-campus or specialised roles (e.g., research assistant work) you might see wages of CAD $20+ per hour. For context, the general minimum wage in Ontario is about CAD $17.60/hour as of October 1, 2025.

ElitePath Educational Solutions provides guidance on finding part-time jobs for students while they study in Canada.
