Work After Graduation

Is the international student eligible for work in Canada after graduation?

International students in Canada may work after graduation. You may be eligible to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) if you meet the following criteria:

  1. You must have completed a full-time program of study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
  2. The duration of the program of study must be at least eight months long.
  3. The study program must lead to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
  4. During your academic program, you must have maintained full-time student status, except during scheduled breaks and the final semester, where part-time enrolment may be allowed.

Key points to note about the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

- The duration of the PGWP is specific, usually between eight months to three years, depending on the length of their study program, as follows:

  • Programs less than 8 months: No work permit eligibility.
  • Programs between 8 months and 2 years: Work permit duration aligns with program length.
  • Programs 2 years or more: Eligible for a 3-year work permit.

- The PGWP is an open work permit, meaning that graduates can work for any employer in Canada, in any occupation, without needing a specific job offer beforehand or a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

- The work experience gained through the PGWP can be valuable for those who wish to apply for permanent residence in Canada. International graduates with Canadian work experience may be eligible to apply for permanent residence through various immigration pathways, such as the Canadian Experience Class.

Can an international student in Canada work after graduation if he is not eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?

If not eligible for a postgraduate work permit:

  • Options for work after graduation may be limited.
  • Possibilities for temporary work permits exist through specific programs requiring a job offer.
  • These programs may involve labor market assessments.
  • Some provinces have their own immigration programs allowing for provincial nomination.
  • Provincial nomination offers a pathway to permanent residency and long-term work/stay in Canada.

ElitePath Educational Solutions, through its trusted immigration partner, can assist you in completing and submitting the PGWP.
